Day by Day Program
Day 1: Arrive in Moshi – Umbwe Gate – Umbwe Camp
Your Kilimanjaro adventure begins with a drive from Moshi to the Umbwe Gate, where your trek starts. After completing registration, you’ll begin the climb into the rainforest, with the path starting steeply and leading through dense tropical vegetation.
As you ascend, you’ll pass moss-covered trees, and the air becomes cooler as you gain altitude. The first night’s stay will be at Umbwe Camp (2,850 meters), where you’ll enjoy a well-deserved rest after your challenging first day.
Day 2: Umbwe Camp – Barranco Camp
Day two brings you from Umbwe Camp to Barranco Camp (3,950 meters). The trail becomes less steep but remains challenging as you climb out of the rainforest and into the moorland zone.
You’ll pass through rocky terrain with incredible views of the surrounding valleys and peaks, and may even spot wildlife like monkeys and birds. Barranco Camp is nestled at the base of the Barranco Wall, offering stunning views and a chance to rest and acclimatize to the higher altitude.
Day 3: Barranco Camp – Karanga Camp
On day three, you’ll tackle the famous Barranco Wall, a challenging, steep rock scramble that rewards you with panoramic views of the mountain and surrounding landscapes. After scaling the wall, the trail levels out and enters the alpine desert zone, offering a relatively easier walk towards Karanga Camp (4,035 meters).
The trek takes about 4-5 hours, and once at Karanga Camp, you’ll have time to relax and prepare for the next phase of the climb. The camp offers a great spot to enjoy the views and continue your acclimatization process.
Day 4: Karanga Camp – Barafu Camp
Today’s hike from Karanga Camp to Barafu Camp (4,640 meters) takes about 4-5 hours. The trail continues through the alpine desert landscape, with rocky terrain and sparse vegetation, as you get closer to the summit.
Barafu Camp is located at the base of the final summit push, and it is here that you will rest and prepare for the night ascent to Uhuru Peak. The camp is often windy and cold, but it is a vital stop for your final push to the summit.
Day 5: Barafu Camp – Summit – Mweka Camp
This is the most demanding day, as you begin your ascent to the summit of Kilimanjaro around midnight. The trek from Barafu Camp to Uhuru Peak (5,895 meters) takes about 7-8 hours, with the goal being to reach the summit before sunrise.
The path is steep, and the air gets thinner, but the sense of accomplishment when you reach the summit is indescribable. After enjoying the views and celebrating your achievement, you’ll begin your descent to Mweka Camp (3,100 meters), where you’ll rest after the long day.
Day 6: Mweka Camp – Mweka Gate – Moshi
On your final day, you’ll descend through the rainforest to Mweka Gate, which takes approximately 4-5 hours. The descent is much easier than the ascent, but it still offers a chance to take in the lush landscapes and wildlife. Once at Mweka Gate, you’ll receive your summit certificate as a reward for your determination and success. From the gate, you’ll be transferred back to Moshi, where you can relax and celebrate your remarkable achievement.
