Day by Day Program
Day 1: Arrive in Moshi – Marangu Gate – Mandara Hut
Your adventure begins with a scenic drive from Moshi to Marangu Gate, where your trek officially starts. After completing registration and briefings, you’ll begin the hike through the lush tropical rainforest, a habitat rich in wildlife and birdlife.
The trail is gradual, making it ideal for acclimatization while enjoying the natural surroundings. You’ll reach Mandara Hut (2,700 meters), where you’ll stay for the night, taking in the stunning views and preparing for the higher altitudes ahead.
Day 2: Mandara Hut – Horombo Hut
On day two, you’ll continue your trek through the rainforest and enter the moorland zone. The hike to Horombo Hut (3,720 meters) takes approximately 5-6 hours, with the terrain gradually becoming rockier and more exposed.
Along the way, you’ll pass beautiful heath vegetation, including giant lobelias and senecios, and enjoy views of Mawenzi Peak. At Horombo Hut, you’ll rest and acclimatize, preparing for the more demanding days ahead.
Day 3: Horombo Hut – Kibo Hut
Today’s trek takes you from Horombo Hut to Kibo Hut (4,703 meters), which sits at the foot of Kilimanjaro’s summit. The terrain becomes more barren and alpine as you enter the alpine desert zone.
The path is challenging but not overly steep, with views of the surrounding landscape that provide motivation to reach Kibo Hut. After arriving, you’ll rest and prepare for the summit push, getting an early night’s sleep for the upcoming ascent.
Day 4: Kibo Hut – Summit – Horombo Hut
This is the most challenging day of your journey, as you will begin your ascent to Uhuru Peak (5,895 meters) in the early hours, typically around midnight. The climb is long and demanding, but you’ll be rewarded with panoramic views and the thrill of reaching Africa’s highest point.
After reaching the summit and enjoying the unforgettable sunrise, you’ll begin your descent back to Kibo Hut for a short rest before continuing down to Horombo Hut. This day requires perseverance, but the reward is well worth the effort.
Day 5: Horombo Hut – Marangu Gate
After descending from Kibo Hut, you’ll make your way back down through the moorland and rainforest to Marangu Gate, completing your trek.
The walk down is less strenuous but still offers stunning views and a sense of accomplishment. Once at the gate, you’ll receive your summit certificate, which is a great memento of your achievement. You’ll be transferred back to Moshi, where you can relax and celebrate your success.
Day 6: Departure or Optional Relaxation Day
On your final day, you’ll have the option to relax and enjoy your time in Moshi or depart for your next destination.
