Day by Day Program
Day 1: Arrive in Moshi – Machame Gate – Machame Camp
Your adventure begins with a transfer from Moshi to Machame Gate, the starting point of the Machame Route. After completing registration, you’ll embark on the trek through the lush rainforest, encountering tropical plants and bird species.
The gradual ascent takes you to Machame Camp, where you’ll rest for the night at an elevation of 3,000 meters. This day’s hike offers an excellent opportunity to acclimatize while soaking in the beauty of the rainforest.
Day 2: Machame Camp – Shira Camp
Today’s trek takes you through the rainforest and up into the moorland zone, with a steady climb that allows for optimal acclimatization. As you gain altitude, the landscape shifts, revealing expansive views of the mountain and surrounding valleys.
You’ll reach Shira Camp at 3,850 meters, where you’ll enjoy dinner and overnight at a campsite with incredible vistas. The moderate pace ensures that you can acclimatize properly, setting you up for the upcoming days.
Day 3: Shira Camp – Barranco Camp
After breakfast, you’ll trek across the Shira Plateau, which offers some of the most stunning panoramic views on the mountain. The path gradually leads you to the Barranco Valley, and you’ll pass through rocky terrain with high-altitude vegetation.
You’ll camp at Barranco Camp at 3,960 meters, located below the impressive Barranco Wall. The steady climb provides a perfect balance of challenge and acclimatization, with breathtaking views of Kilimanjaro’s glaciers.
Day 4: Barranco Camp – Karanga Camp
This is an exciting day as you begin with a steep but manageable climb up the Barranco Wall, a rock scramble that provides a sense of adventure. Once at the top, you’ll continue along the ridge to Karanga Camp at 4,035 meters.
The path offers fantastic views of the summit and surrounding areas, with alpine desert terrain and dramatic landscapes. Karanga Camp is the perfect place to rest and prepare for the next stage of your journey.
Day 5: Karanga Camp – Barafu Camp
Today’s trek leads you from Karanga Camp to Barafu Camp at 4,640 meters, where you’ll rest before your summit push. The trail is relatively short but includes some challenging sections as you ascend towards the alpine desert zone.
The views of the surrounding glaciers and valleys are stunning, and Barafu Camp offers a unique perspective of the summit. After arriving, you’ll prepare your gear and rest for your midnight ascent.
Day 6: Barafu Camp – Summit – Mweka Camp
The summit day is here! You’ll begin the ascent at midnight or early morning, climbing through the night to reach the summit at Uhuru Peak (5,895 meters). The climb is tough, but the views from the top of Africa at sunrise are unforgettable. After reaching the summit, you’ll descend to Mweka Camp at 3,100 meters for the night, where you’ll celebrate your achievement and rest.
Day 7: Mweka Camp – Mweka Gate – Moshi
On your final day, you’ll descend through the rainforest back to Mweka Gate. The trail is easy, and you’ll be able to enjoy the lush vegetation and wildlife of the lower slopes. Once you reach the gate, you’ll receive your summit certificates, a well-deserved reward for your hard work. Afterward, you’ll be transferred back to Moshi to relax and reflect on your incredible journey.
