About Arusha National Park
Arusha National Park is a compact yet incredibly diverse park, offering a unique blend of habitats, from lush rainforests and grassy savannahs to alpine meadows and volcanic craters. Located just a short distance from Arusha, the park is famous for its panoramic views of Mount Meru and the Ngurdoto Crater.
The park is home to a wide range of wildlife, including the endangered black-and-white colobus monkeys, and offers a serene and less-crowded alternative to the larger national parks in Tanzania.
Arusha National Park is also home to the beautiful Momella Lakes, which are rich in birdlife and surrounded by stunning scenery. The park provides a perfect mix of wildlife, birdwatching, hiking, and cultural experiences, making it one of the best places for an immersive safari experience.

Attractions Found in Arusha National Park
Standing at 4,566 meters, Mount Meru is the second-highest peak in Tanzania, offering awe-inspiring views of the surrounding landscape.
The mountain is a popular trekking destination and an excellent way to acclimatize before tackling Mount Kilimanjaro. The climb takes 3 to 4 days and rewards trekkers with breathtaking views and unique wildlife.

Often referred to as the “Little Ngorongoro,” this volcanic crater is a key highlight of the park.
Although smaller than the Ngorongoro Crater, Ngurdoto is equally scenic, providing visitors with a stunning view of its lush green terrain.

These seven picturesque lakes are a haven for birdwatchers, with hundreds of flamingos and other migratory bird species.
The lakes are also home to hippos and offer a chance for canoeing safaris, giving visitors a peaceful way to enjoy the park’s natural beauty.

The park is home to an array of wildlife, including giraffes, zebras, buffaloes, elephants, warthogs, and various species of monkeys.

Weather and Climate in Arusha National Park
Arusha National Park enjoys a temperate climate due to its proximity to Mount Meru. The park experiences two main seasons: the rainy season and the dry season.
- Dry Season (June to October): The best time to visit the park, as wildlife is easier to spot due to the drier conditions. The weather is generally warm during the day and cooler at night, making for a comfortable safari experience.
- Rainy Season (November to May): The rainy season is split into two periods: short rains (November to December) and heavy rains (March to May). While the park is still accessible during the rainy season, wildlife viewing can be more challenging due to thicker vegetation and less predictable conditions.
How to Get to Arusha National Park
Arusha National Park is easily accessible from Arusha, one of Tanzania’s main safari hubs. The park is located just 25 kilometers (about 40 minutes) from the city, making it a convenient option for travelers on a short safari or those looking for a day trip from Arusha.
- By Road: Most visitors arrive by road, with easy access from Arusha. Local tour operators, including Sky Wanders Safaris, offer transfers to and from the park, as well as guided safaris within the park.
- By Air: For those coming from other parts of Tanzania, flights to Arusha’s Kilimanjaro International Airport or Arusha Airport are available, followed by a short drive to the park.
